I finally bit the bullet over the weekend regarding my “Various Artists" C/Ds. They were stored in boxes in a cupboard in my "office" where I have wall to wall shelving for my C/Ds. music DVDs and books. This is where I spend the winter days as I have my Hi-fi, computers and TV up here. I had finally run out of space. There was over 500 CD titles many of which were doubles, triples, box sets etc. I don’t remember the last time I played any other than a few favourites that I had on my shelves. I rang some charity shops to see if they wanted them. I think the numbers put them off as they declined. A friend of a friend who organises charity events for a nearly village ( Car boot sales, jumble sales etc.) was contacted and she came over and took the lot I did keep a few of them ( about 12 or so) A very difficult decision for me as I don’t usually part with any of my music collection although I did give a load of “Bootleg" CDs to one of the members here a few years ago after "digitising" them onto a hard drive. I will now have a look at my “I own it" on 45 worlds and deselect this option for these items.
Is there anyone else out there who got rid of "Chunks" of their collections and how did you feel about it ???? I still have the first music item that I bought with my own money in 1960 – “Walk Don't Run" by the Ventures on the Top Rank label. I still have this in it’s original sleeve and wouldn't part with it. All my vinyl is in a store room downstairs and there is very little room for any more.

Back in the late 1970s when 12" singles seemed to be taking ove from 7" singles, I decided to get rid of a significant chunk of my Reggae collection. Very few new 7" singles were being issued, and I lost interest. Just a few years later, I very much regretted it, and started tracking down the missing singles.

It took me over 30 years to get back what I was missing. I've not had any purges since!

An awful lot of CDs are going to landfill. Charity shops here in NI are the same, + you just can't walk in with anything anymore you have to book an appointment which I think is a bit rich because you're stocking their shops for no cost whatsoever. I reckon there's so many going to landfill that CDs are going to go the same way as vinyl. When the CD generation get fed up paying over and over and over for their streaming services they'll be looking to reinstate their CD collections. Personally, I would hang on to them if you can.

Bought a few 100 CD's from my local charity shop for 10p each last month and today bought 5 for a pound from another charity shop. In the same shop they were selling Jim Reeves, Rolf Harris etc. LP's for a £1 each !

I feel for you kab2112.
I still have just about every music media item acquired over more than 50 years now, although the total collection would be considered quite modest by many. I only recall ever getting rid of 2 vinyl albums in that time. At the moment I can't envisage getting rid of any of it. I've still got a lot to add to various Worlds! We stream a lot in our house but I still buy physical media regularly.
My magazines on the other hand have been through a few major purges and I now only have the last 15 years or so of Mojo and Record Collector. A few years back I started scanning the ads for gigs (to enter on Live Music) before disposing of magazines and I still have at least 2500-3000 shows to add from my last purge.
With a few special exceptions, books are regularly purged in our house but that's to make space for more books - 90% of which are now purchased second hand online or from charity shops.

I have loads of boxes up in the attic full of magazines that I keep threatening to get rid of. Mainly music and motorcycle related from the 1970's onwards - Kerrang, Record Collector, Mojo, Classic Bike, On Two Wheels, Road Bike to name but a few. No doubt I will get them sorted some day.

I forgot to mention the 2600 football programmes I have as well....
Bar a few from last season all entered on 45spaces but I've had to stop acquiring more for lack of space and marital harmony.

Having got rid of my Various Artist C/D collection due to a lack of space, I have also been getting rid of many of my bootleg C/Ds.
A few years ago, I was in a small circle of like minded folk who exchanged bootleg C/Ds on a one to one basis. Many of these were good quality recordings - studio - soundboard – radio broadcasts etc.
C/Ds were copied and posted, and artwork was sent by E-mail. We agreed that we would not distribute outside of the group and certainly not have any for sale. This arrangement fizzled out some time ago. I am still in touch with one or two of them but we don’t exchange stuff any longer.
With the exception of a few of these, my discs were stored in boxes in a cupboard in my “Office”. Over the last few weeks, I have been “digitising” them by copying them onto a hard drive connected to my desktop computer. The discs have then been binned. This was not easy to do on my part as I don’t usually part with any of my music collection, although I did give some to one of the members here a few years ago. I have started to got through my collection on 45worlds and deselecting the "I own it" tab. This could take a while.
I’m looking at the empty C/D cases and wonder what to do with these ?????
My wife is totally amazed !!!!!

I did think of asking members here if they wanted my bootleg discs before putting them in a recycling bin [over 300 discs]. I did copy most of them onto a hard drive before "Getting Rid" I desperately needed space and theye were in boxes in a cupboard so they had to go.
