This list, and the one on the first CHUM chart is to show records that are available on 78 that appeared on the charts issued by Canada's first and arguably greatest Top 40 radio station -- 1050 CHUM in Toronto Ontario

AM Radio station CHUM broadcast on 1050 khz from Toronto Ontario. After 12 years on the air, CHUM switched to a Top 50 format on 27 May 1957, the first station of its kind in Canada. It very soon become the top station in Toronto, and the CHUM Chart was a major indicator of record popularity not only in Toronto, but across Canada. In many ways it is to Canadians, and particularly to people in Ontario, what Radio Luxembourg is to people in the UK and Europe

By 1989 CHUM adopted an oldies format that played much of the music of its golden era of the 50s, 60s and 70s.

In 2001, CHUM's then owners dropped all music and moved to a sports talk format known as Team 1050. This was a flop and in 2002 they returned to the oldies format of the previous years.

In 2009, in what some see as a tragedy, owners CTVglobemedia once again dropped all music and began simulcasting the audio of their cable/ satellite TV news channel CP24. The move was widely criticised by media commentators.

Having failed, again, in 2011 they revisited the sports talk format and became TSN Radio, an offshoot of the Canadian cable/ satellite TV sports channel TSN. This, too, is proving to be a failure as the station lags behind its competitor The Fan 590, capturing only 1% of the audience.

Virtually all traces of the historical 1050 CHUM loved by all have been erased from the internet.

All in all, the debacle of CTVglobemedia's handling of the historical legacy of CHUM is a travesty and a slap in the face brought about by corporate greed, to the history of Top 40 radio and music in Canada .

"I listen to CHUM" was a contest-winning answer when you picked up the phone. When I was working in Alert NWT I also listened to Radio Luxembourg over the top of the world. Your post was pleasing to read. Thanks.
