There's going to be some fun and games when people start scanning CDs which have the greater part of the 'label' unprinted, with all the shiny bit showing
Here's what my scanner makes of these

I like the results.

I've been scanning some cassettes and they on the other hand look a bit rubbish.

My scanner invertes the colours, if the majority of the surface is shiny silver then the silver looks black

I think they look better photographed at a slight angle..unfortunately this makes them difficult to 'circle'..I decided to photo them 'Head 0n' which means getting your camera in the reflection. Better than a scan though!!
It has been suggested photography requires a flash....NO, never use a flash to photograph your records or CD's. The best method will always be 'daylight' and not TOO much of it.
Alternatively I have started photographing through a hole cut out of cardboard or an LP mailer, sometimes a white card is too bright in the reflection so I use a brown card or mailer. I find using the camera on timer helps...

yes, I scanned a few and tried a couple of solutions. If you have any CD-R spindle packs laying around, check the case for clear plastic "dummy" discs. They're at the top and bottom of the case. Try laying one or two in front of your disc when scanning. That might cut down the bad "mirrored" reflection creating "black" or unsightly colored streaks (usually blue or orange).
A slightly defused "dummy" (acting like silk-screen, found on most CD labels) might fare better than a smooth clear one or two.

Photographing requires a flash and then you get a white glare spot.

No you certail#nly mustn't use flash. You need a reasonable and diffuse light but you can photo in bright indoor light or outside on a bright overcast day

Thanks for the suggestion re "dummy" discs. I just tried it but it only made the slightest difference:

[image]11779[/image]Here's what you get if you angle the disc in the scanner,an egg!.At least it's legible though, albeit with a few ghostly shadows :) .

Scan the item in a poly sleeve (the slightly dull sleeves), it cuts out reflections and doesn't affect the image that much.
