8 for a regular user.

Mods can add up to 99.

100 or more would have to go in notes.

Do CDs have a maximum number of track IDs?

I know you can get up to all kinds of tomfoolery in a mastering studios.

(Hidden tracks BEFORE the first track was a favourite of mine - spooky!)

What's the difference between an ordinary CD and a CD single with 8 tracks (or more) ? Honest, I'm lost.

most CD singles with more than 5 tracks are usually dance music with remixes/versions

I would say that a release with more than 6 different songs is an album. 4-6 songs is the equivalent of the vinyl EP.

You won't see it 'cause it's on my desk, but I got a CD with a cardboard sleeve and 79 tracks on it. (Francophonie Diffusion)

And is it a single?

What's the overall running time?

Around 33 minutes, according to iTunes.
That's what I'd like to know ! How can I tell if it's a single !?

I can send you 2 tracks by mail if you wish. It's a promotional kind of thing for French-speaking radio stations all over the world, introduced by Manu Dibango.

I'd class that as an album.

Which may be good news for your fingers?

My fingers are on strike, anyway: they complain about the overload of work for 45worlds already

Are we going with this as the definitive guide to whether or not something is a CD single or not?

Seems reasonable enough to me... I'm sitting on a couple of 6-trackers here wondering whether to add or not.

I should probably add this to the guide...

Is your record a single or an album? Wikipedia states that "any record with more than four distinct tracks or with a playing time of more than 25 minutes is classified as an album for sales-chart purposes".

I'd agree with Thatsunday that 6 tracks and under 25 minutes is fine.

i.e. This 6 tracker. which is probably under 20mins is more of an EP than an LP (Long Player)

What about this one? Five versions of the same track with a running time of about 34 minutes!

Yes that's fine too.

Wikipedia...

more than four distinct tracks

I remember the fuss over a Shamen CD single which was 70 minutes long or something like that. All mixes of the same track.

(I think it was The Shamen at least)

There are shedloads of dance-y CD singles with long mixes on. They're still singles IMHO.

I added this one earlier which is longer than some albums! http://www.45worlds.com/cdsingle/cd/vscdx1616 - but it's definitely a single.
