I'm setting up a Kindle Fire for a friend, and I notice that if you buy an album download or download a track you see an image of the CD on the Kindle, whereas if you rip from a CD or other recording and transfer to the kindle you see only a generic track symbol, similar to a CD Single World entry without any images. Obviously, as you've not got any images pertaining to your rip
Looking at the Kindle files, you can find folders within the 'Music' folder, containing the images, both for the Albums and the individual tracks, but I cannot see any obvious way the images are linked to the artist, album or track. These images are duplicated within different folders with random-sounding names, like '150' '270' etc
Of course all catters are handy with scanning, cropping and resizing images for CDs, and I wondered if anyone can advise how image files are linked to mp3 files in Kindles and mp3 players in general

No, the images come with the download and are available off-line
I know the AMG db gives you the title and tracks when you play a CD with Real Player, never seen it give images on Media Player, but it's very impressive how it recognises the majority of albums, and I submit the info when it doesn't

JJ what you need is a program such as Tag&Rename (there are other free ones just google "mp3 tag editors" or similar).
What Tag&Rename allows you to do is to amend the ID tag to MP3 files including the assigning of jpg files to the MP3. I have used it since starting with MP3 files in the 90s.
Some MP3 players such as my Sonos system won't deal with a picture above 500x500 so you'll need to check what a Kindle Fire does.

Super, SS! That sounds good, I'll try it on the home PC and prepare some albums for transfer to the Kindle next time I visit. IIRC The images were 350px square
I'm now playing the few mp3's I've purchased, on the PC, and I find that the images show on VLC' Media Player, but not on the Real or MS players

If they show on VLC, you might be able to save the screenshot. Set your hotkeys to snapshot the screen (mine is set to the Backspace key). If it works, it will save it to your drive as a jpeg or bmp so you can crop in a photo editor. Depends on what resolution the pic is as to whether its worth doing though.
