Notes

Launched by US network ABC as its answer to CBS' 60 Minutes, the first episode of this long-running newsmagazine series had a very different format that included comedy sequences involving animated caricatures of Jimmy Carter and Walter Cronkite, which (among other things) resulted in the premiere episode being savaged by critics and viewers. By the time the second episode aired a week later, the original hosts had been fired, along with the producer, and the show essentially began again with a "do-over" episode.

Early episodes spelled out the title as Twenty/Twenty but the numeric version became the standard.

At one point, 20/20 was airing at least three nights a week. Spin-offs/companion series included 20/20 Downtown and 20/20 Saturday (a highlights compilation from past episodes of the parent series). Between 1998 and 2000, 20/20 was temporarily merged with another ABC News program, Primetime Live. Followed by a New Zealand version that launched in 1993.

The premiere episode has been posted on Youtube. I'm not going to post the link here because it's the complete episode so might be a bit dicey on copyright, but it's bizarre. The Jimmy Carter segment has a claymation-style animation Carter lip-synching to Ray Charles' Georgia on My Mind for some unknown reason. They were clearly going for irreverent, maybe with a dash of Laugh-In, but it didn't work. Ironically, though, there are elements of the failed "pilot" episode that we'd later see turn up more successfully in shows like Real People. Instead of sticking with that format, the next week they'd dumped the two relative unknowns (who now I think of it did resemble Rowan and Martin to a degree) and brought in seasoned veterans like Hugh Downs.
