Notes

Inspired by the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the series was preceded by a rejected pilot that aired in 1970 as the TV movie The Young Country. A retooled pilot aired just prior to the start of the first season.

Series star Pete Duel committed suicide on Dec. 31, 1971. ABC ordered that production of the series continue and Roger Davis, who had been the show's narrator up to this point and who had also been the star of the rejected first pilot, was drafted on very short notice (reportedly within hours of Duel's death) to take over Duel's role and the series continued for another year.
