Some additional history: the character's name was original Archie Justice and the series was to have been called Justice for All. The pilot carried this title and O'Connor played the character Archie Justice (reportedly the original plan was for a straight remake of Till Death Us Do Part starring Jackie Gleason!). Mickey Rooney was reportedly also sought out for the role. The first pilot was rejected, so a second pilot called Those Were the Days was filmed with different actors playing Gloria and Lionel Jefferson. Michael Stivic was Richard. According to Wikipedia, All in the Family was the first major US series to be videotaped (as opposed to filmed like The Dick Van Dyke Show was) in front of a studio audience.

Monolith: you are correct... that is mentioned in the rolling end credits of every episode.
23skidoo: thanks for all the info... you're right, it was "Archie Bunker's Place"

@GEMSFAN: I think you meant "Archie Bunker's Place" (which was actually a continuation not a spinoff). Other spinoffs included Gloria, 702 Hauser, and spinoffs-of-spinoffs included Good Times and Checking In. The sitcoms House of Payne and E/R (not the medical series but an earlier sitcom with the same title that also featured George Clooney) are in the same universe thanks to crossovers by George Jefferson. (EDIT: corrected title of Checking In)

I've got all the seasons of this. It is amazing what Norman Lear managed to show in this sitcom.
A very funny show back then, that "today" wouldn't be possible with all the sensitivity against "race" and "religion". Times were simpler back then and this show luckily made fun of everything and didn't pinpoint on just any one thing.
