After appearing in two popular episodes of Great Railway Journeys of the World in which viewers followed him on rail journeys as he visited towns and met people, Palin launched this series which saw him attempt to travel around the world in 80 days following the same route outlined in the Jules Verne novel.

A major success, this series led to more epic travel documentaries by Palin that continued with Pole to Pole in 1992 and continued into the 2010s.
