Historical sitcom, with each "season" set in a different era of British history, from Medieval times through to the First World War. Each season carried a different title, as well (see list). There was also a one-off special, Blackadder's Christmas Carol, broadcast in 1988, as well as two mini-episode specials: Blackadder: The Cavalier Years, shown during the 1988 Comic Relief Red Nose Day charity appeal; and Blackadder: Back & Forth, a reunion story produced in 2000 to mark the millennium and originally produced to be shown in London's Millennium Dome (though it was later broadcast on TV and released on DVD).

Neil Forbes 5th Sep 2015		@RC, thanks for that. Regrettably I still haven't seen it(my bad luck) but I might chase it up on DVD so I can watch it without those accursed TV station "watermarks" polluting the image.
Neil Forbes 5th Sep 2015		@Sladesounds, fair enough but I remember Rowan Atkinson from Not The 9 o'clock News and he came across as a total imbecile. That was the impression he left on me so I just dismiss him as an imbecile and leave it at that, but Tony Robinson has successfully shaken off the stigma of his Blackadder role to become a master of the TV documentary genre with extremely entertaining and informative shows under his belt.

Neil Forbes 5th Sep 2015		@RC, your 2/9/2015 comment: "Yes I remember he did one of your former home town" He(Tony Robinson) was in Australia to do some shows about our participation in the two World Wars(so I believe), and I think I heard something about him doing a show on Newcastle, but as yet I haven't seen it.

23skidoo 2nd Sep 2015		@Sladehounds. I remember the controversy over Goes Forth. It was around the same time people were trying to make other people feel guilty for liking Hogan's Heroes (usually those who are unaware of the background of that show and its cast). Most critics I find are silenced after they view the last 3 minutes of the final episode that you linked to, which casts the entire series into a different light and is actually one of the most powerful scenes I've ever seen in a comedy series (you'd never see a US sitcom do this; even MASH sent everyone home eventually except for Col. Blake). I only wish they hadn't made Blackadder's Christmas Carol where we saw a glimpse of a future Blackadder because I think it would have been far more powerful an ending if that final scene had depicted the end of the Blackadder line.

sladesounds 2nd Sep 2015		Neil whilst everyone has an opinion I must disagree with your earlier comment on Rowan Atkinson and offer a counter argument. Although not my favourite comedian by any means I respect the longevity of his career and the influence he has had on others. Now Mr Bean and his later movie I rarely rate at all however his role in these series', in my opinion (and only an opinion), put him well above his contemporaries at that time and secured his place in the British comedy annals. My favourite of the series, Goes Forth, initially raised concerns that it may have trivialised the Great War however it went on to win the 1989 British Academy Television Award for best comedy series. Although written by that stage by Richard Curtis & Ben Elton, Rowan's portrayal of Blackadder, alongside Tony's Baldrick and Hugh Laurie's George made the series. I am glad to see that it has been widely reported that Rowan & Tony have a cunning plan to return for a new series although they are worried if they can afford Hugh Laurie given his superstar status (and wage packet) acquired from the success of "House".

Neil Forbes 2nd Sep 2015		I have seen some of them, They turn up occasionally on SBS, lately they're used as schedule-fillers, keeping a time-slot "seat" warm for another show. The format is: He leaves his car behind and walks through towns and villages, and the surrounding regions, explaining the history of the area as he goes. The walks take about 3 days and these are condensed into an hour's programme.
23skidoo 2nd Sep 2015		Robinson was also doing the whole "Dirty Jobs" thing long before Mike Rowe. I recall he also did a great one on the history of Christmas. Incidentally, Robinson was quoted last month as saying another Blackadder series is planned but there's a concern they can't afford to pay Hugh Laurie's fee now that he's become a big US TV star with House. While I don't share Neil's dislike for Atkinson, I do think the ending of Blackadder Goes Forth was perfect and they don't need to do another. (Actually I think they did do a mini episode with Kate Moss about 10 years ago.)

Neil Forbes 2nd Sep 2015		While I've got no time, or respect for that utter moron, Rowan Atkinson, one person in the cast has shown himself to be a master presenter of documentary shows, Tony Robinson goes from strength to strength in his role as presenter/narrator of shows like "Time Team", "Britain's Real Monarch" and other shows of that genre.
