This was a remake of the American game show The Match Game (the opening credits are even formatted similarly), which has run in various formats since 1962 (though the version Blankety Blank(s) is patterned after is the famous star-studded comedic version from the 1970s).

Thanks for that info, RC. They got in two full seasons, then churned it out again in repeats.

....And "Dick Did", too! And so did Cyril! My recollection of the Aussie show running into the 1980s is likely because of the shows being so often repeated to fill scheduling gaps.

Yep I think the show went for twelve months due to low ratings and Daves jokes started to run out

There was, of course, the Aussie version of this show, only here it was Blankety Blanks(plural), The first version was produced in the studios of Station ATV-Melbourne and the compere was the legendary Graham Kennedy*. Included on the Panel was Noelene Brown, Barry Creyton, Stuart Wagstaff* Ugly Dave Gray who were fairly regular on the show and two other panellists who were semi-regular or occasional guests. This version ran from about 1977 to sometime in the early 1980s. A revival of the format fronted by Shane Bourne(wonder if he had a brother named Mel - ha-ha) was produced in the studios of Station GTV-Melbourne in the early-to-mid 1990s but I don't remember who was on the panel.
(*deceased - sadly missed)

He he he... this was probably the crappest game show of all with the crappiest prizes. I think I saw about half the Wogan editions and then somebody at the BBC in a stroke of genius replaced him with Les Dawson who truly ripped the p*** out of it in his own inimitable manner with the expected comical results.

Dawson certainly went to town when it came to the prizes, putting on his pithy voice and almost sobbing "lets have a look... at... the prizes" I do remember the Boy George make up set with a wig being one of the prizes in one show which legend has it was actually won by some granny, but I can't remember that being the case. Good fun. Never bothered with the Lily Savage version... some things are best left in the past! Especially the obligatory Blankety Blank cheque book and pen or as Dawson sometimes mangled it to a "Blankety Blank cheque pen and book!"
