Notes

Pioneering reality series that followed the lives of police officers in the US and internationally. The series had no regular cast members or host however some officers appeared multiple times, most notably Oregon Sheriff John Bunnell who appeared more than a dozen times on Cops and subsequently hosted and/or narrated a number of crime-related reality series.

Early episodes featured a look at the officer's home lives, but this aspect was soon abandoned.

The series ran on Fox from 1989 to 2013, at which point it was cancelled, but production was then continued by the cable network Spike. A reedited version of the series is syndicated as Cops Reloaded. It was also promoted under the title Primetime Cops

The Cops format, including its theme song ("Bad Boys") was widely parodied. An episode of The X-Files was a crossover with Cops.

Despite being present during dangerous situations, up until 2014 no Cops production member had ever been seriously hurt during recording. This changed when an audio technician was shot to death during a shootout in August 2014 in Omaha, Neb.

Not to be confused with the animated series COPS or the UK series The Cops.
