Notes

One of the longest-running police procedurals in US TV history, CSI popularized the genre of tech-heavy forensic investigation series and also broke new ground for network commercial TV in terms of depiction of human remains.

CSI was cancelled at the end of its 15th season in 2015, however CBS announced that a finale TV movie would air as a standalone later in the year.

Established a franchise that so far has included the spin-off series CSI: Las Vegas (2002-2012), CSI: NY (2004-2013), and CSI: Cyber (2014-present). The series Cold Case and Without a Trace are set in the same continuity as both have had crossover episodes with CSI; a crossover episode with the sitcom Two and a Half Men was also produced, though it is left more ambiguous as to any narrative connection.

Several CSI episodes have aired in the UK as TV movies.

Although ostensibly set in the "real world", the show's occasional use of ultra high-tech equipment led to it being nominated several times for science fiction entertainment awards such as the Saturn Awards, though it is not considered part of the SF genre.

@zabadak Yeah, after they launched CSI: Las Vegas it became a bit of a joke. There was a popular stage play here in Canada called CSI: Moose Jaw. The original CSI series actually addressed this early on. Pedersen apparently wasn't thrilled with the idea of a CSI spin-off series so when they did an episode where a TV crew visits the CSI lab to do research for a CSI-style TV series, we hear Grissom mutter something to the effect that there are too many CSI-style shows on TV!

My favourite episode though will always be the one called "Fur and Loathing" where they investigate a murder at a "furry convention". (Which is a real thing; apparently people into that lifestyle have mixed feelings about the episode which was one of CSI's few straight up comedy episodes.) They also weren't afraid to go even weirder from time to time. There was one episode set at a sci-fi convention where members of the Battlestar Galactica cast were suspects in the murder of a character based on BSG's controversial producer, another where a character appeared to be based upon William S. Burroughs' Dr. Benway, and even one that played with the title (if nothing else) from Doctor Who.
