I always found it ironic that in a series where explicit language was almost a character in and of itself, that one of its lead characters would be named Swearengen. (I know McShane's character was based on a real person by that name. I just thought it was funny.) I'm not a huge fan of shows where they swear just because they're on cable, but Deadwood and Peter Capaldi's The Thick of It are exceptions because the swearing was so well written. In the case of Deadwood - and I'm not the only one to pick up on this - it was actually written and performed with a pseudo-Shakespearean air. At the time the show was on the air there was a bit of a short-lived meme on YouTube where people would take episodes and create "swear edits" consisting solely of characters (mostly Al) swearing. I watched one and amazingly it was actually possible to loosely follow the plot of the episode, just with the swear words! I think that Pirates of the Caribbean movie he was in would have been a lot better if they'd only let McShane let loose a few times!
