TV Series
Notes Initially a prime time game show inspired by the success of Groucho Marx's You Bet Your Life, hosted by comic ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his alter ego, Charlie McCarthy. After one season the show shifted to daytime with up-and-comer Johnny Carson as the host. The series title changed to Who Do You Trust after Carson's first year and the game format changed. The game was notable for its comedic stunts often performed by Carson. He became a national TV star due to the series and this led to him taking over the Tonight Show from Jack Paar in 1962. Ed McMahon joined as the game show's announcer in 1958 and became a popular double act with Carson; he ultimately moved to Tonight, too. An Australian version of the series was produced in 1957-58.
