Notes

Behind the scenes series launched to promote revival of Doctor Who in 2005. Episodes were 45 min. long originally, devoted to the making of an episode of parent series, though as time went on the series expanded to explore themes featured in each episode, with the cast often acting as documentary hosts. One episode featured an original Doctor Who mini-episode titled “Death is the Only Answer” featuring Matt Smith as the Doctor and written by schoolchildren.

Preceded by a standalone special “Doctor Who: A New Dimension” that aired prior to the launch of the series revival and was narrated by David Tennant before his casting as the 10th Doctor was announced. During its run, Confidential had its own spin-off, Totally Doctor Who, which looked at the making of the series but was geared to younger viewers. There were also a number of standalone Confidential specials broadcast, most notably the episode aired in Jan 2009 that announced Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor.
Due to licensing rights over music and footage, plus the logistics of releasing 13-14 episodes each of equal length to those of the parent series, video releases featured edited-down versions of the episodes (usually 15 min. each) retitled Doctor Who Confidential Cutdown.

Confidential cancelled at the end of Series 6 of Doctor Who (2011) due to its home network, BBC Three, allocating funding elsewhere. During Series 7 (2012-2013), a scaled-back, untitled version of Confidential was uploaded to the BBC website. Fans dubbed these shorts “Confidentialettes”. With Series 8 (2014), the series returned as a webseries now titled Doctor Who Extra, again scaled back from the TV series with each episode 10-15 min. in length. With Series 9 (2015), Doctor Who Extra was released in two formats: brief featurettes of 1-2 minutes each released online and focusing on aspects of each episode (several were released for each episode), and full-length half-hour versions released initially for download and later on DVD.

I added an end date of 2015 for this as it ceased to be a regular production in this format after; two standalone episodes aired in 2016 and 2017. Otherwise, it was replaced by a new behind the scenes series, Inside Look (later retitled Closer Look), which was released on Youtube rather than broadcast.

Technically Doctor Who Extra isn't a series or a continuation, but the format is the same, it's made by the same people so rather than make a separate entry for Extra I've combined the two here. I have no objection though if someone would prefer Extra be listed separately (in which case the end date for Confidential would be 2011). Due to the way Confidential became almost a reality show at times (for example, one episode followed the cast as they explored the topic of wish fulfillment; another episode saw Karen Gillan interviewing someone about the prime meridian), I've included the major cast members of the parent show itself as it's really no different than if they'd gone off and done their own show elsewhere. If the decision is made to make Extra its own listing, please delete Jenna Coleman and Peter Capaldi from this cast list here as they were only involved with Extra.
