Pre-broadcast reviews indicate the series originally was titled These Friends of Mine but it could not be confirmed whether it ever aired under that title.

Notable for having its lead character come out as gay in a 1997 episode (concurrent with lead actress DeGeneres doing the same in real life), which was promoted as the first time this had occurred in with a lead sitcom character. This led to a change of tone for the sitcom for the remainder of its run.

23skidoo 18th Oct 2015		Sadly, the show's historic aspect - having the lead character "come out" - was also its downfall. Not so much because it happened (though I'm sure that played a part as US audiences weren't really prepared for it yet and there had only been a couple of gay lead characters in prime time up to this point) but because the show for a while became all about Ellen being gay and telling everyone. The mistake was that the show became about being gay rather than about a character who happens to be gay. Big difference, and it made me and a lot of other viewers move away from it as a result. No problem with the reveal, but it was delivered with the subtlety of a sledgehammer which was OK for a two-parter but it became the perceived (note that word - whether it actually did is irrelevant as this still became the public's perception of it) focus of the show.

23skidoo 7th Jul 2015		Wikipedia and other sources, including several contemporary reviews, indicate this series originally carried the title These Friends of Mine. But I couldn't find a title screen, even on episodes recorded off TV and posted online. If anyone can find a screen capture using the original title, if it was ever broadcast, please feel free to post.
