23skidoo 21st Aug 2015		@TopPopper. Two seasons, sure, but they simply made too few episodes for us to really develop a rapport with the characters. As such, for example, the finale of Extras really had zero impact. I only really remember it because of the Doctor Who bit. And I was discussing the Office with a friend of mine who was a fan of both versions and he said outright the US version was far superior because they had more time to develop the characters. The US version ran perhaps several years longer than it should have (certainly they shouldn't have kept it going after Carrell left) but it still allowed more development. Red Dwarf is another series that has short seasons, and it really didn't hit its stride until about Year 4. Some shows require a year or so just to shake out the kinks in the format and characters. We saw that with the revival of Doctor Who.



TopPopper 21st Aug 2015		That's interesting because I was always pleased with the idea that they ran for just two series. Some comedies get tired because they stick around too long and run out of ideas - a few iconic ones, Fawlty Towers being a good example, the Young Ones being another, just give you everything they have, then stop without getting cliched.



23skidoo 21st Aug 2015		The biggest problem I had with this show is the same problem I had with Gervais' original Office: too few episodes. There are some shows where the UK short-season style works great, Fawlty Towers, for example, but both Gervais series I think suffered from the fact the characters were intended to be so deep, yet they weren't given enough airtime to really gel. I think both shows would have done better, in my mind, if they'd been given even 12 episodes a season. The entire run of Gervais' office was 15 episodes (including a special) and Extras ran for only 13. Not really enough time to get to know them. Compare with the Steve Carrell version of The Office (since there isn't I don't think a US version of Extras yet to compare), which surpassed the run of the original within its first season, never mind the fact it ran for just over 200 episodes.



TopPopper 20th Aug 2015		Underrated in my opinion. There are several great episodes, like the one where one of the other extras decides to befriend him and they end up going for dinner. I think Stephen Merchant was excellent in it, too. The Christmas Special in the Big Brother house was superb too, I think.



23skidoo 20th Aug 2015		This show was hit and miss with me, though I loved the idea of having celebrities parodying themselves. My favorite episodes are the one with Daniel Radcliffe coming on to Dame Diana Rigg, and the final episode which put Andy in the middle of an episode of Doctor Who.
