Notes

Live-action Hanna-Barbera series about Roxana Banana, an orangutan who escaped from a circus and was given special super powers from the rays of a UFO spaceship. Roxana was adopted by the Cole family but was also pursued by two crooks, Hank and Hubert, who wanted to use Roxana's power for their own crooked ways. Also included "Jungle Broadcasting System," which parodied then-current TV shows and music videos with animals as stars.

Only 13 episodes were made, but NBC decided to cancel "Going Bananas" after the 13th episode and not rerun the series for the remainder of the season due to poor ratings (perhaps because the show was placed in a slot where some affiliates overlap that time with their own local or nationally syndicated programming, adding to said problem).

"Going Bananas" hasn't been seen since Saturday, December 8, 1984.

@moax429 Except there isn't necessarily any "vault". As I mentioned a large number of films and videos were lost in the Northridge earthquake that destroyed a storage facility. Also there's no real commercial value in holding onto everything, especially a show killed after 13 episodes, and we don't know if the tapes still existed when WB took over the Turner holdings. Being it's a Hanna-Barbera production - and a rare example of a live-action show by them, at that - a more likely place to look is an HB archive, should one exist. Or hope someone liked the show enough in 1984 to videotape it themselves and those recordings have survived.

 23skidoo:
Yes, it was shot on videotape.

I didn't think "wiping" was still prevalent into the 80's. And I thought when Warner Bros. took control of Going Bananas - that is, once they purchased Turner Entertainment Co., which last owned Hanna-Barbera - the show would have been safely locked away in their vaults.

I can only hope a miracle happens that the other episodes of this show will be located if they are indeed "lost."

@moax429 - If the show was shot in videotape it's quite possible that may be one reason why it wasn't kept. Even as late as the 1980s they were still wiping tapes for reuse, particularly if there was no commercial value seen. Sometimes also contracts, licenses, etc. prevent archiving. There was also the Northridge Earthquake of 1994 which wiped out some archives (including, for example, the archived copies of most of not all episodes of the 1960s sitcom My Living Doll according to the DVD release of the dozen or so episodes they were able to locate elsewhere).

Located and uploaded opening title screen.

I was surprised to discover at lostmediawikia.com that not too many episodes of Going Bananas are surviving, and a few that are are dubbed into Portugese.

Funny, considering Warner Bros. now owns Going Bananas (when they bought Hanna-Barbera Productions in 1998, Warner Bros. supposedly inherited this show), and that it's of fairly recent vintage.

Let's hope Warners might have some archival prints of the show in their vaults.
