@23skidoo, I only got to see a brief portion of the show at my brother's place. Back at home(Stockton, NSW) our Sydney antenna blew down in a storm around 1972 and we were restricted to the local commercial station(NBN) and the ABC station(ABHN). Not much of a choice there! And Hee-Haw was definitely NOT on NBN's schedule!

@Neil Of course the debate is which show was the more intelligent of the two! Hee Haw was definitely the more successful, incredibly running for some 25 years, which was even longer than Ed Sullivan managed.

@23skidoo I remember seeing a bit of one of these shows once many moons ago when, on a visit to my Brother's house(some time around 1975 or so, he lived at Warners Bay then, with his family, and was able to pick up the Sydney stations.) Not sure which station carried this show, but what I saw of it made me immediately think of Laugh-In.

@Neil. Yeah, I mentioned that in the notes. It had very much the same format with the quick jokes and the like. The only major difference is the show had more of a musical focus, and there was also a bit more focus on T&A (pretty much every female cast member on the show other than Minnie Pearl was a prototype for Daisy Duke).

And like Laugh-In they often tossed in any weird thing that happened on the set. Like this funny little clip where Johnny Cash and Buck Owens got an attack of the giggles and they just tossed it in. You can see Don Harron's Charlie Farquharson character at the very end of the clip:

 As I recall, this show was the C. & W. Music world's answer to Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In.

I forgot to mention that in the 1970s there was a Canadian version of this show called Funny Farm. I don't know if it was an official spin-off or just a copy, but I do know that Canadian icon Don Harron, who imported his Charlie Farquharson character into the States to do Hee Haw, also appeared on Funny Farm as Charlie. I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Don several times before his death and he was a really nice fellow.
