TV Series
Notes Longest-running series of any genre in Canadian history, preceded by a radio version that ran from 1931 to 1976. Primarily associated with the CBC network, which uses this title for not only games broadcast in the traditional Saturday night time slot, but on other nights and daytime as well. Also used even if the games themselves are not played in Canada between Canadian teams. Between 1965 and 1975 the franchise was shared with CTV which broadcast games on Wednesday nights. In 2014, CBC lost exclusive rights to the program which was thereafter shared with the Sportsnet cable network. The famous "Hockey Theme", considered by some to be Canada's second national anthem, was introduced in 1968 and was used until 2008 when the CBC lost the rights to it; since then the theme has been used for hockey broadcasts aired on CTV and its affiliate cable networks. During the 1970s, the Hanna-Barbera studio produced Peter Puck, a series of animated minisodes explaining the rules of hockey that aired occasionally between periods; the cartoons have since been released as a standalone on DVD.
