Variety series created as a rival to The Ed Sullivan Show and to allow reuse of a theatre facility across the street from Hollywood's famous Capitol Records building that had undergone an expensive renovation for the quickly cancelled Jerry Lewis Show.

The series had no permanent host, with different celebrities hosting each week, however Bing Crosby was the show's most frequently guest host, hosting the show's first and final telecasts.

Raquel Welch was a regular during the first season prior to launching her film career; she later returned as a guest star.
