Followed in 2000 by the follow-up TV movie Homicide: The Movie.

Exists in the same fictional universe as the Law & Order franchise, with several crossover episodes and, after the end of the series, Richard Belzer's character as imported to be a regular on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (making SVU technically a spin-off of both series). The series also had direct crossovers with St. Elsewhere and Chicago Hope.

Belzer also appeared as Munch in multiple other series ranging from St. Elsewhere to the science fiction series The X-Files. The canonicity of these appearances (especially on shows like The X-Files) with relation to Homicide and L&O has been a matter of fan debate for years.

Homicide was one of the first American series to spawn an online webseries spinoff: Homicide: Second Shift.
