Notes

Preceded by the 1973 TV movie The Marcus-Nelson Murders. Followed in 1985 by the reunion TV movie The Belarus File and another in 1987 titled The Price of Justice. During the 1989-90 the series was resumed with Savalas as part of the ABC Mystery Movie "wheel" block of rotating series. Followed in 2005 by a remake series starring Ving Rhames in the title role, which was soon canceled. As of 2015 plans were underway for a big-screen adaptation of the series.

What I'd like to know is... how did the German TV station, Norddeutscher Rundfunk(North German Broadcasting) get hold of "clean" video in order to superimpose their German titling?

23skidoo 9th Sep 2015		Back in May someone posted the iconic opening credits to Kojak. It's interesting to compare how different countries promoted these shows. Here is the German version of the opening credits. Although the music is the same for some reason rather than the rather dynamic opening used in the US they went with a bunch of rather dull scenery shots of NYC ending with a shot of Kojak driving his car. Give me the US version any day! (Though to be fair even this is better than the awful final-season credits the US version used!)
23skidoo 23rd Aug 2015		I still can't believe they were insane enough to try and do a remake of this a few years ago. Ving Rhames starred. He's a great actor but the problem is the producers didn't seem to realize that the only reason this show is remembered today is that Telly Savalas. The show lived and breathed his personality, his Greek heritage. It wasn't just a show about a bald guy with a fetish for lollipops. (Actually, the lollipops didn't turn up till a ways into the first season; Kojak and Savalas were smokers and apparently the use of the lollipops was introduced as a way to allow both the character and the actor to quit smoking on camera since smoking was falling out of vogue on TV. Kojak I recall actually says in one scene that he sucks on the lollipop because he's trying to cut down on smoking.)

Mind you what he got away with was NOTHING compared to Telly Savalas bagging a number one with "If"...then again, we did send "Cinderella Rockefeller" to number one as well... oof!
Neil Forbes 26th May 2015		Nope! Nothing odd here, We were just commenting on the fact that Telly Savalas, the guy who played Kojak, actually took that lollipop out of his mouth long enough to record a few songs for MCA. What success they met with is neither here nor there.
23skidoo 26th May 2015		Has something gone odd in the comments system? It looks like a number of people here are leaving comments about some record Savalas released as opposed to the TV series. The review by Record Collector above definitely doesn't belong here, I don't think.
Neil Forbes 26th May 2015		I only bought it because it was an example of the MCA label as distributed by EMI in 1974(a scary look into the future, as things turned out, with MCA-Universal trying to swallow up all the other record companies.... sends shivers up my spine! Brrrrrrrr!)

I've got a British EMI-MCA issue from 1974 of him doing "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" where he actually sings(or tries to) in the chorus line of the song. How to describe the disc? Unusual might be a word one could use.
Monolith ● 26th May 2015		@Record Collector. I think instead of just switching off the sub woofer, a better idea would be to switch off the stereo and just go and make a sammich instead. His rendition of If was a totally unnecessary and painful incursion into the world of music.

biffbampow 26th May 2015		I got a Kojak-set for a birthday present when I was a kid. Blimey... you just reminded me of a long forgotten Christmas present! Yeah... them handcuffs were pretty useless... they never worked on my 2 year old brother much to my annoyance since if anyone deserved handcuffing, it was him!
BiggieTembo 25th May 2015		I got a Kojak-set for a birthday present when I was a kid. It had a plastic snub-nose 38, a NYPD badge (still got that), a notebook, a shoulder-holster, a pair of plastic handcuffs (that you could easily escape out of), a Kojak ID Card (like, I'm Kojak!), a sort-of light/telescope/microscope/ball-pen thing (never remember him using that in the show), a pair of plastic Ray-Ban-like dark glasses (Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards more like), and a fricken lollipop! All that was missing was a pink rubber swimming cap and a blummin' beige roll-neck sweater!
