First live-action prime time scripted US network series to run for 20 seasons since Gunsmoke ended its run in 1975.

Launched a multi-series franchise that include not only several Law and Order-branded series (Special Victims Unit, Criminal Intent, LA and Trial By Jury), but as Conviction, and a number of international adaptations including Law & Order: UK which initially featured remakes of L&O episode rewritten for UK Law. This series also exists in the same universe as Homicide: Life on the Street which was featured in several crossovers of the original series, plus a major Homicide character later joined Special Victims Unit.

Original series ran for 20 seasons between 1990 and 2010, becoming only the second live-action prime-time series after Gunsmoke to reach the milestone. The series returned to TV in 2022 with what was announced as its 21st season.

23skidoo 14th Jun 2022		I have asked the admins to remove the end date on this since the current revival series is being explicity referenced as a continuation of the original series, rather than a new series with the same title. Same precedent used for Doctor Who.



23skidoo 27th May 2015		Another one where I had no choice but to employ a lengthy "selected cast" list. I just took characters from the regular series and not those featured in the pilot movie.
