Technically, this comedic celebrity competition series is a spin-off of The Tonight Show (specifically its Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon incarnation) where the Lip Sync Battle game was first introduced, though it is not officially called a spin-off due to it airing on Spike, a network with no direct connection to NBC, where Tonight airs. The game itself was devised by actor-writer Stephen Merchant of The Office fame, who introduced it on the Tonight Show and is one of the series' producers.

LL Cool J hosted the series concurrently with his appearances in NCIS: Los Angeles.
