Co-creator Paul Reiser has said the series was inspired by the 1961-66 sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show. The two series exist within the same universe thanks to Dick Van Dyke character Alan Brady (played by original actor Carl Reiner) making an appearance in two episodes.
