This short-lived sitcom was produced to capitalize on the popularity of Saturday Night Fever and the disco dance fad. The producer of Saturday Night Fever co-created the series, though it is not considered a spin-off of the movie (John Travolta's sister, Ellen, was a cast member of the series).

Series star David Naughton also recorded the theme song for the series, which was the only aspect of the show to become a success when it was released as a single.
