Notes

Based upon the 1970 film of the same name, with Gary Burghoff the only major cast member from the movie to return for the series. (The film was based on a novel by Richard Hooker).

Spin-offs: Trapper John, M.D., After MASH and the TV special W*A*L*T*E*R (originally a pilot for a series that wasn't picked up).

The series ran for 8 years longer than the actual Korean War it depicts.

Although initially produced as a sitcom, the series soon evolved into a comedy drama (a decade before the term "dramedy" was coined. The series was considered groundbreaking in its day for airing some episodes without a laugh track.

The show's final episode in 1983 ran for two and a half hours on its initial broadcast and attracted 125 million viewers, a record that still stands for a scripted-series American network broadcast.

Whereas for me I preferred the show when it got serious, but as you say personal choice! Today it still holds up well but why I prefer the serious episodes is because back in the 1970s shows established as comedies simply did not do what MASH did. The producers were always fighting the network over things like use of laugh track. I think they were also concerned about being another Hogan's Heroes. Many people condemn Heroes for making light of war, and MASH, which started while Vietnam was still in play, could have easily gone that route. Thing is the move towards more dramatic episodes was not entirely against the concept of the original movie, which could also get dead serious from time to time (and that was clearly a Vietnam War movie in disguise; they didn't even bother backdating the actor's hairstyles!).

I loved this show up until the drama took precedence over the comedy.
Lost it for me then, I have the first 8 seasons which I enjoy immensely.
The remainder hold nothing for me.
I seen them all as they originally aired but grew more and more dissatisfied with it as the seasons went on. Just my personal choice.

Colonel Blake was my favourite character.
