Early episodes of this series were broadcast live. Extremely popular in its early years, Real People - a magazine-style show taped with a live audience mixing humorous and serious features plus political commentary - sparked a trend towards audience-driven reality TV that continued into the early 1980s with series such as That's Incredible and That's My Line.

Real People itself spawned two spinoffs: Speak Up, America (an expansion of a "have your say" feature) and Real Kids, a version of the show aimed at children hosted by child actor Peter Billingsley who joined the parent series after Real Kids was cancelled.

23skidoo 5th Jun 2015		Much of today's reality TV, as well as a good chunk of things like YouTube, can trace their origins back to this series that was the American Idol of its day (seriously, at its height it was huge in the ratings). Today it's quaint and somewhat silly, but I think it'll stand as a valuable time capsule of American life in the early 1980s.
