I used to work with the guy who wrote the sketch with the talking toaster. Closest I ever got to fame.

@23skidoo, I wish they'd bring back the "Hollie"(Holly) character, either Hattie or Norman in the role, between them they helped "make" the show! The "Hollie(or Holly, for alternate spelling) character just disappeared in latter series. shame, that!

@Neil I wouldn't mind seeing Chloe Annett back as Kochanski, especially since Back to Earth attempted to set up an arc about Lister trying to find her that was ignored in Series X. She appeared to drop out of TV acting for a while but her IMDb listing is now showing some recent credits. PS: I just noticed the spelling of Robert Llewellyn's name is wrong. I've submitted a correction.

@23skidoo, it's fairly safe to say they'll get the main four back(Chris Barrie[Rimmer], Craig Charles[Lister], Danny John-Jules[Cat] and Robert Llewellyn[Kryten]) but Hattie Haybridge and Norman Lovett seemed to go AWOL toward the end of the last regular series(that is, before the 3-episode Back To Earth and other "specials" were made)., So I don't expect to see Haybridge or Lovett as "Holly" in the new versions.

@Neil. Latest word is they're filming two seasons back to back sometime this year, with the first (Red Dwarf XI) airing in 2016, so not too long now. I haven't heard anything about casting. I assume the regulars will all be back, though whether others from the series like Chloe Annett will return I have no idea. Probably not as Series X was clearly meant to move the show back to its roots and I assume (and hope) that continues.

The first network in North America to air this show was the children's network YTV in Canada (before PBS in the States started showing it). At the time, YTV was indeed a kid's channel so they were forced to do some very heavy editing to some episodes. The word "smeg" managed to survive but some stronger language didn't, as well as some burping as I recall. And they never even bothered airing the infamous Polymorph episode! I never saw that one till the video releases started coming out!

When Danny John-Jules was making Maid Marion and Her Merry Men He had to rush from the Set and didn't have time to Change. So there was This Rasta Driving through London at 1 In the Morning as It was one of the Night Shoots. Full Dreadlocks on, And get's stopped and searched by the Police. Danny went along with It. Then just as they were about to put Him In the Patrol Car. He pull's off the Wig. Well talk about embarrassing They all Laughed about It. True, He told me this Himself. H.

@23skidoo, thanks for that info! Yeah, I heard Craig Charles got himself into a legal stoush. Glad it was resolved, though. It wouldn't surprise me that they'd use the Coronation Street sets for Back To Earth. Sets for one show get recycled for another. Remember "Peyton Place"? The outdoor set for the town centre was recycled and remodelled for the series, "Cade's County".

@Neil: Robert was also hosting a thing called Scrapheap Challenge (broadcast in North America as Junkyard Wars). Charles also got involved in a major legal issue which tied him up for a while (I won't repeat what it was as the charges were thrown out though I think it might have been the reason why there was a 4-year gap between classic-era seasons at one point). Of course there was also the 10-year gap between VIII and the Back to Earth Series 9 and they did a bunch of stuff like Chris Barrie appearing in Angelina Jolie's Lara Croft films. It was during that hiatus that Charles went onto Coronation Street and the fact Back to Earth was partially filmed on that show's sets was linked to this.

Craig Charles was doing Coronation Street, and Danny John-Jules was appearing in Death In Paradise as well, so they weren't exactly idle. Robert Llewellyn was presenting a science & technology show(title escapes me at the moment) so he wasn't exactly sitting on his hands either.

I'm always surprised they never decided to make a season of more than 6 or 8 episodes. Then again, the fact they only did 6 during most of its original (1980s-90s) run allowed cast members to go off and do other shows. Chris Barrie, for example, starred in The Brittas Empire while Danny John-Jules made Maid Marion and Her Merry Men, mostly between seasons of Red Dwarf.

Smeggin' great! Can't wait to see the new series, so hurry up ABC, get it on quick! Ditch that stupid QI rubbish(Steven Fry's done far better than that) and give us Aussies the new Red Dwarf series, pronto! And don't forget to practice your Arnold Rimmer salutes!

Once season 11 is produced, Red Dwarf will become the second longest-running live-action SF series, behind only Doctor Who (it's currently tied for second place with several other shows with 10 seasons including Stargate SG-1 and Smallville). But if you consider that the series has technically been running since 1988 (with a number of loooooong gaps between seasons), one could argue that it has already outlived the original Doctor Who's 26-year run! Made more remarkable by the fact the original cast has remained all this time (I know Chris Barrie technically left at one point, but he was ultimately only gone for a few episodes so that hardly counts).

The word on this one is - it's been renewed for two more seasons! Smeggin' great news! Now everyone, get ready to practice your Arnold Rimmer salutes!
