23skidoo 22nd Jun 2018		ABC has just announced that the series will continue without Roseanne and retitled The Conners. However I'm also seeing it referred to as a spinoff/separate series. If it ends up being a separate series then I say we can close off the original with a 2018 end date. But if it's a continuation - like what happened when the sitcom Valerie was retooled as The Hogan Family after its marquee star quit between seasons - then based on that precedent, The Conners should be added as an alternative title and the listing continued here. EDIT: Looks like The Conners is officially being considered a spin-off, rather than a continuation, so I've gone ahead and put in the end date. It can always be changed later if it turns out to be a Hogan Family situation instead.



23skidoo 24th Mar 2018		Since the series is now being continued with the original cast, and we usually keep continuations under one entry, I've asked the mods to remove the end date off the main entry. (Edit: the show has just been renewed for what is officially being called its 11th season.)



Twistin 18th Aug 2015		I get welled-up just thinking about that final episode. Roseanne is a horrible person, but she played her role well and the rest of the cast were brilliant. I found her grating, as well, and didn't bother with the show in its initial run, but when Nick-at-Nite did their first marathon (week-long, if I recall), I watched it all and was blown away. Despite the often outrageous situations, I found it to be very real and convincing; I felt like I knew this family.

23skidoo 18th Aug 2015		@zabadek The Simpsons had already been created by this time so Roseanne had no impact on that show. I don't think anything she did was particularly groundbreaking (Archie Bunker and Maude covered most of the same ground a decade earlier), but it was a popular show. I couldn't stand it myself because I didn't like Roseanne - found her too grating - and she overrode my liking of John Goodman who I think is one of America's greatest actors. I did however like what they did in the final episode, even though many fans were outraged. People were wondering why the final season suddenly turned into a modern-day Beverly Hillbillies/Pruitts of Southampton and then the final episode hit like a ton of bricks. I believe the popularity of Roseanne is also to blame for the fact we didn't get a Doctor Who series in 1996 - Fox aired the pilot movie opposite Roseanne and it was creamed in the ratings.



zabadak ● 18th Aug 2015		The impact of this show cannot be overstated! Without its groundbreaking approach to family relationships - Roseanne is such a bad mother (in the family sense!) but everybody loves her - there might not have been any Simpsons etc. etc. :happy:
