Notes

Longest continually running children's series in American TV history (and possible English-language TV history), with as of 2015 several first season cast members still with the show.

Marketed internationally beginning in the 1970s with Canada producing a version of the series combining US material with specially shot Canadian content. This lasted until the mid-1990s when the CBC replaced Sesame Street with an all-Canadian series called Sesame Park, which was cancelled after a few years. Many other countries have produced their own versions of Sesame Street over the years.

Two live-action feature films featuring series cast and characters have been produced: Follow That Bird and The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland.

Although not technically a spin-off, The Electric Company was aimed at children who had outgrown Sesame Street. Due to the series popularizing Jim Henson's Muppets (in particular Kermit the Frog), The Muppet Show is often erroneously considered a spin-off; except for the occasional crossover involving signature Muppets Kermit and Rowlf the Dog, the two series are not connected.

In 2016, after nearly 47 years on PBS, Sesame Street moved to the cable network HBO, which saw some change in formatting. The series continued to air on PBS, though new episodes were to air on HBO first.

23skidoo ● 20th Jul 2015		Sonia Manzano, who has played Maria on Sesame Street since 1971, recently announced she was retiring from the show. For those keeping score, that's 44 years which I believe might be a record for an Hispanic actress in an ongoing TV role (unless someone in a soap opera has her beat). She also was a writer for the show, winning 15 Emmys (I don't know if she plans to continue writing for the show). The longevity of the people involved in this program is admirable.



23skidoo ● 20th Jun 2015		@zabadek Yeah, that's probably why the CBC ultimately replaced it with Sesame Park which was an awful show, and some countries just did top to bottom new shows. Which was fine, but I'm sorry nothing in this world beats James Earl Jones counting to 10. (I love what he does at the end. For some reason I remembered that bit for years afterwards.) By the way, this was recorded for the original test/pilot episode and was used as proof of concept for the series. Jones was the first celebrity to appear on Sesame Street as a result.



zabadak 20th Jun 2015		Yes - came under fire in the PC era for being US-centric ("zee" instead of "zed") which is ironic, now, as we are accepting more and more US terms over English ("jail" instead of "gaol")! :shocked:



23skidoo ● 18th Jun 2015		I can't imagine my early childhood without this. Even when I was a teenager I'd occasionally tune in because the Muppets were cool, but the show lost me when it became more about Elmo. The title screen here is from the very first season before the famous sign was established as the logo. The show made some impressive creative decisions over the years. When Will Lee (Mr Hooper) died in real life it formed the basis for a groundbreaking episode used to introduce children to the concept of death and loss. And I remember they decided to eliminate a running gag involving the humans on Sesame Street never meeting Mr. Snuffleupagus (a furry elephant-like character Big Bird befriended but who the adults didn't believe existed because he always wandered off before they could see him) out of concerns that children might be afraid to be honest with parents and teacher about things like abuse (the logic makes more sense than the way I described it).
