Notes

Mitch Miller was a noted orchestra leader and record producer who worked with many popular recording acts of the 1950s and 1960s, though he was equally as famous for turning down Elvis, Buddy Holly and the Beatles. Sing Along with Mitch was geared primarily to older/elderly viewers and would feature the lyrics to the songs superimposed on the screen allowing viewers to sing along. Several featured singers went on to successful careers, including Bob McGrath who went on to spend more than 45 years on Sesame Street.

The UK series Sing Along with Max (featuring Max Bygraves) was an adaptation of Sing Along with Mitch.

Reruns of this series aired in prime time in 1966.

23skidoo 27th Jul 2015		@Monolith. Although modern-day karaoke didn't emerge until the early 1970s, the Wikipedia article on the subject does acknowledge Sing Along with Mitch as the antecedent of the concept (though there were movies that predated the TV show that did this too).

23skidoo 26th Jul 2015		@Trainman. He was, and he hated rock and roll so as I note above, he rejected Elvis, The Beatles, Buddy Holly and I believe Bill Haley as well. Interestingly, the whole "follow the bouncing ball" bit was a myth. Mitch never actually did that in his shows, but because it was something other shows did and occasionally movies, it became associated with his show which annoyed him to no end.



Trainman 26th Jul 2015		"Follow The Bouncing Ball" It also spawned a whole series of "Sing Along With Mitch" LP's. It was quite the fad ca. 1960 or so. I believe Mitch was actually A&R Director for Columbia Records.
