Ahh yes one of those stand in programs in case a regular program episode isn't available

This show was very controversial for its time, so much so it had to air a special disclaimer on US broadcasts. The reason for the controversy and the disclaimer? It was the first major US network series to feature an ongoing, openly gay character. I think Billy Crystal deserves more credit for breaking ground than he gets for this. As I recall, his character along with Benson and a smattering of others, were the only sane ones in the show.

Interesting trivia discovered when I was entering names: Robert Urich appeared in this show at the same time he was co-starring in the Betwitched spin-off, Tabitha, and almost immediately moved on to do Vega$.

Classic! I hate to admit that I generally detest American sitcoms for a variety of reasons, mainly being they just don't make me laugh. The two that succeeded where most of the rest failed was "Police Squad" and this - "Soap"

It was just utterly insane - the characters were genuinely mad and the situations grew ever more absurd and dafter as it went along. Jessica and Burt were utterly wonderful rich bonkers leading characters but the rest of the cast were just as good too. I always loved that guy who only ever spoke through his ventriloquist dummy... the way they'd sit there looking at each other reacting to the madness around them... brilliant!
