Notes

One of the most legendary British TV shows of all time. It began life in 1961 as a straight forward crime drama series featuring John Steed with Dr David Keel played by Ian Hendry. Some editions went out live and only two episodes survive. Hendry left and in the second series, Steed was paired up with three different companions - Venus Smith (Julie Stevens), Dr Martin King (Jon Rollason) and Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman) - it quickly became evident that Blackman was the most effective foil so she became the main partner for the third series. In 1965, American TV injected funding into the show enabling it to be shot on 35mm film as opposed to being a TV video studio production. Elizabeth Shephard was cast as new companion Mrs Emma Peel but after shooting just one episode, it was felt she didn't have the right touch for comedy and was replaced by the then unknown Diana Rigg. The show hit it's perfect formula and the fifth series was shot in glorious colour. Rigg left in 1967 and replaced by Linda Thorson who featured in the final series as Tara King. The American company decided to withdraw funding and interest due to falling viewing figures and the show came to it's end in 1969.

Followed by a revival series, The New Avengers.

To update the Notes on this: as of summer 2022, the number of known surviving Series 1 episodes is 3 (one of which doesn't even feature Patrick Macnee!), plus the first 15 minutes or so of the very first episode. There's still hope more may emerge over time.

I uploaded a title screen from the first episode (which is on DVD). I'll leave it up to the mods whether to use it instead of the more-familiar logo as the main image.

@biffbampow. It looks like the system parses the MacN automatically. I entered the name correctly when I did the New Avengers listing and it automatically made it MacNee (probably related to how it automatically capitalizes every word in a title). I agree a lot of people get it wrong and I never really started paying attention until recently myself.

I've got the VHS set that Patrick Macnee "rescued" and had released through Canal Video, every episode that Dame Rigg was in. It's probably my most watched set of tapes.
Several of those episodes (Including the Queen of Sin one) never were shown here in the colonies, they were considered too risqué for American television.

@biffbampow. No objection. I think since this section is in Beta anyway, if anyone from 45worlds is paying attention to these comments I think a gallery of title screens would be great. Especially with a show like Doctor Who, for example, or The Avengers where the title screens actually evoke an era. The one used here evokes Peel and King, but not Keel or Gale, for example. And The New Avengers used a unique "New Avengers in Canada" logo for its final few episodes, too. PS. Note that Patrick Macnee's name is now capitalized correctly. 45world's input system automatically parses with a capital letter after Mac, but Patrick does not do this with his name.

I'd add all of them all in order they were used.

Since we're using screen captures of the title screens I wonder if we shouldn't be using the title card used in the early seasons? Although it may not be as well known as the Peel-era one, it was the original branding. It's a shame they don't allow a gallery of title screens since there were several for this show.

Steed saving his fingers and blowing the pea before the axe fell, biffing someone unconcious and then looking in the mans jacket because he wanted to know who was his tailor. Moments which I shall treasure for ever.
