Notes

ITV regional football highlights for the London area. When regional coverage ended in 1983 the title was used for the whole country.

@Paul Vinyl, indeed, proper football. No wimpy falling over (not as much anyway) Tough guys not afraid to go for the ball. A lot of today's players wouldn't last five minutes in the seventies game. Better days as far as I'm concerned.

I've been watching some of those oldmod, what a slower game it was.
And some of those pitches they played on a mud bath wouldn't be allowed these days.

Although it's really a separate programme, those who watched this may enjoy The Big Match Revisited. Currently showing on TV again, this week has been from 1977...

I think ABC here in Australia used to show this

That's the one TP! Many thanks. I guess the font name came later as it was used on the picture sleeve of The Herd's Paradise Lost single in 1967.

There is something called the Yellow Submarine font. Whether it was created for the film, or that's just a nickname for it, or whether that matters, I have no idea!

I haven't been able to find an answer, but I've asked at a broadcasting history forum I'm on and I'll pass any info on as I get it.

PS: "Brian Moore's head looks uncannily like London Planetarium"

(See Side 1 Track 5 here).

100% agree The Judge. Tyne Tees Television had Shoot. HTV usually took The Big Match but occasionally ATV's Star Soccer. Southern Television I seem to remember had a hybrid programme titled (I think was), South Sport Soccer And The Big Match with both Southern star and London Weekend captions split screened and chroma keyed at the end.

Always loved that font used on this and World Of Sport up to the end of the '70s. Any ideas what it's called?

Because of the regionalised nature of ITV (which should never have been abandoned in my view), most parts of Englandandwales had their own programmes of this sort: Granada had The Kick-Off Match, ATV had Star Soccer, but I can't remember what the other ones were called...

"Pictures are from Tyne-Tees Television, the commentator is Kenneth Wolstenholme, and Newcastle are in the striped shirts"

Each region had its own main commentator as well: Kenneth Wolstenholme in the NE, John Helm in Yorkshire, Gerald Sinstadt in the NW, Hugh Johns in the midlands, Gerry Harrison in the east, Martin Tyler (I think) in the south, and Bob Symonds in Wales.

Always thought this was better value than MOTD as it had 3 games to the other's 2! Well, I was young... :erk:
