Notes

Spin-off series: A Different World

Credited with revitalizing the sitcom format on US TV and also turning around the fortunes of NBC which was struggling in the ratings in 1984.

Notable for in later seasons having a different opening sequence each year. For one season the opening theme was performed by noted a cappella vocalist Bobby McFerrin.

Early episodes credited Phylicia Rashad as Phylicia Ayers-Allen.

@zabadak I remember the complaints about that, but the response at the time (and I think it holds up) is the idea was to show that black families were not consumed with "racial issues" day in and day out. I do think they hit on things on occasion, sometimes in very subtle ways, but this was supposed to be a sitcom not a racial drama or a remake of All in the Family. The bizarre part was the show was also criticized for featuring a successful (and let's face it, rich) black family, as if it was somehow improper for a show to suggest that blacks could be upwardly mobile (while providing role modeling - I bet a lot of youth (black and otherwise) were inspired to go into medicine because of Cliff Huxtable. (All the more pity that the show's legacy is taking a beating right now.)

Another one I enjoyed at the time. Its main criticism then was that, although it had an all-black cast, it did not tackle racial issues. Of course it didn't, it was a tea-time show! Still, it had to face a lot of Uncle Tom-ish comments. :erk:

I know nothing of Cosby's stand up, this was my first sight of him and I quite enjoyed the show but found myself continually watching it because of habit rather than anything else.

Recent allegations have impacted a lot of people's opinion of this show, but taken on its own merits it was a great expansion of Cosby's stand-up comedy stories and they managed to get some fantastic guest stars on. I remember Danny Kaye and Lena Horne, to name just two. This was the top show on TV when it first aired and still holds up fairly well on its own merits as they seemed to avoid doing too much that would seriously date the series.
