TV Series
Notes The Honeymooners originated as a series of sketches performed on the DuMont series Cavalcade of Stars and the first CBS iteration of The Jackie Gleason Show between 1951 and 1955. As a standalone series, The Honeymooners only lasted for one season of 39 episodes, however thanks to syndication went on to become one of the most famous early sitcoms of all time. After cancellation, additional Honeymooners skits (including musical episodes) were produced as part of a revived Jackie Gleason Show during 1956-57. Gleason would revive the characters for sketches in his 1962 series Jackie Gleason and His American Scene Magazine, followed in 1966 by the reunion standalone special The Honeymooners: The Adoption. Between 1966 and 1970 the Honeymooners were also part of another Jackie Gleason Show (now produced in color), and at one point CBS wanted to produce a one-hour Honeymooners series, but discussions fell apart. A further Honeymooners skit aired in 1973, and finally between 1976 and 1978 Gleason produced four one-hour standalone specials after which the characters were retired. Gleason was the only actor appear throughout the various runs. A big-screen remake of the series, reimagining the lead characters as African-Americans with Cedric the Entertainer as Ralph, was released in 2005. Producers William Hanna and Joseph Barbera later confirmed that their iconic animated series The Flintstones was based upon The Honeymooners. International remakes of the series (authorized or otherwise) have been produced in Canada, Indonesia, Poland, Netherlands, and Sweden. The Netherlands version ran for 16 years. A few years before Gleason's death, many of the skits from the 1951-57 era were put back into circulation as "The Lost Episodes" and are sometimes aired alongside the so-called "Classic 39".
