TV Series
Notes Considered one of US TV's most notorious failures, The Jay Leno Show was an attempt by NBC to continue the format of Jay Leno's version of Tonight after he had ceded the position of host to Conan O'Brien in the spring of 2009. This new series was scheduled for Monday to Friday in the coveted closing hour of prime time, which forced a number of scripted series to earlier time slots and at least one series, Southland, was forced off NBC to cable. Ratings for the new show were never strong but NBC persevered until local affiliates began to complain that the low ratings were impacting their nightly local news broadcasts. In response, NBC attempted to move The Jay Leno Show out of prime time and back to a late-night time slot preceding Tonight. O'Brien resigned as host of Tonight rather than see the show moved to post-midnight; subsequently, The Jay Leno Show was cancelled and Leno was reinstalled as host of Tonight for another four years.
