Notes

Recorded in Nashville. During the first season, Cash was required by the network to feature a mixture of guests including current TV stars, comedians and performers outside his preferred genre. For the second season Cash was able to call more of the shots in terms of who would appear and also began producing theme episodes on topics ranging from Gospel music to country comedy.

Followed in 1976 by Johnny Cash & Friends, a Summer replacement series with an extra emphasis on comedy; this series, in turn, led to an annual series of Johnny Cash Christmas Specials starting in 1976 that would continue until 1985.

I was able to locate an image of the series logo from the opening credits. I'm not sure how one replaces the main image so I've asked the mods to swap it out. (Edit: and they did so within the hour! Many thanks!)

@nboldock He had a lot of people on who weren't normally seen on network TV. He had a huge battle over getting Bob Dylan to appear. And I read a biography that basically suggests the series was cancelled because Cash insisted on doing things like an episode devoted to not only gospel music, but the episode (which is on Youtube) stops midway through for a sermon by Billy Graham. Have to respect Cash for sticking to what he felt was important, though he did compromise with the network by, for example, devoting an episode to comedy songs. If you want a real mind-blower, seek out the duet he does with Tony Joe White on Polk Salad Annie!

JC also had Pete Seeger on the show, despite the fact that Seeger was blacklisted at the time.
