TV Series
Notes US-Canada co-production. After the series ended there was an attempt at a follow-up spin-off called The Farm (set in a women's prison) which got as far as a 20-minute "proof of concept" pilot short being produced, but did not get a series commission (the later Orange is the New Black had a similar concept). A reality series titled The Real L Word (focusing on real-life LGBT individuals) followed in 2010 and is considered an official, if non-narrative, spin-off. The series was notable for its sexual explicitness, often involving well-known actors. While not the first series of this type to be produced, it is credited with pushing back the boundaries of explicitness in American TV (this above and beyond its portrayal of LGBT relationships, considered groundbreaking for US TV alongside its contemporary series Queer as Folk), opening the doors for later series such as Orange is the New Black, sense8, Power and Shameless, among others that feature explicit content that had generally been previously restricted to so-called softcore erotica series prior to shows like L Word.
