I think Bowie also had a problem stepping down from his role in The Virgin Soldiers.

I learned not that long ago that The Green Hornet is actually a spin-off of The Lone Ranger. It was created by the same people and Britt Reid, the lead character, is said to be a nephew of Dan Reid, the Lone Ranger. To make things even more bizarre, if one wants to consider the 1966-67 TV series with Van Williams and Bruce Lee as taking place in the same "universe" as the Clayton Moore TV series and movies, then that means this traditional western, indirectly, takes place in the same fictional universe as Batman (due to the GH TV series crossing over)!

It's also said of George Reeves who played Clark Kent/Superman in the "Adventures Of Superman" that he couldn't separate his character role from reality. I think he even tried to fly and came a-gutser*(*Aussie slang for "had a nasty accident").

Clayton Moore had difficulty divorcing himself from his character

Same kinda thing happened to David Bowie after doing The Man Who Fell To Earth, and Bjork after Dancer In The Dark. They weren't trained actors so they couldn't step down from the roles after being absorbed by them for months of intense filming. In Bowie's case - he made some great albums out of that. Bjork went a bit crazy though.

Allegedly, after the show's lengthy run, Clayton Moore had difficulty divorcing himself from his character. He was regularly seen wearing a black mask in public, until prevented by a court injunction. Harsh!
