Notes

UK-US co-production (but produced primarily by ATV), preceded by two US-produced pilot episodes in 1974 and 1975. In 1979 it became one of the few TV series to spawn a motion picture spin-off while still in production, The Muppet Movie, which in turn spawned a number of sequel as well as the animated series Muppet Babies.

Followed by a short-lived revival of the original concept, Muppets Tonight, in 1996.

Although several Muppets appeared on both series, in particular Kermit, and Jim Henson, Frank Oz and other "muppeteers" worked on both shows simultaneously, The Muppet Show is not a spin-off of Sesame Street.

One odd memory I have about this show is that for some reason in my neck of the woods the show, at least for a while, aired at something like 9 or 9:30 at night, so it was often the last thing I'd see before going to bed (being only about 7 or 8 at the time it started). So the closing theme always made me a little depressed because I knew when it was over I had to go to bed!

They were quite creative in their choice of guests. One week they might have character actor Zero Mostel (who if I recall correctly actually died soon after filming his episode), the next it would be Cheryl Ladd of Charlie's Angels, the next it might be Johnny Cash. I think after a while, just like with Sesame Street, everyone wanted to be on the show.
