Notes

Remake of the 1970-1975 series (which in turn was adapted from Neil Simon's stage play and film of the same title). The major difference was that the lead characters were reimagined as African-Americans in this version. A number of episodes were also remakes of episodes from the original series and an updated version of the original film and TV series theme music was also used.

A total of 18 episodes were produced, but two were not broadcast.

I think the main problem with this remake (aside from the fact they initially chose not to write original stories but rather reuse scripts from the 1970s) was it came too close after the original show. I've seen bits and pieces of this and Glass and Wilson (who at this time were best known for their work on Barney Miller and Sanford and Son, respectively) were excellent choices to play Felix and Oscar, and there was nothing wrong with changing the races of the characters since there was never anything inherently white or otherwise about them - but the show was simply too soon after the Tony Randall/Jack Klugman original - they even used the same theme music. If they'd waited another 10 years (and written more original scripts) this might have actually done well. And I don't think it had anything to do with making the characters black either; by 1982 the idea of a black-centric sitcom was no longer a novelty; Wilson's own Sanford and Son helped pave the way for that.
