Notes

Originally planned as a big-budgeted US-Canadian co-production, budget cuts and other behind-the-scenes changes resulted in The Starlost being filmed on a shoestring budget, shot on video in a TV studio in Toronto. Series co-creator Harlan Ellison had his name removed from the credits, substituting "Cordwainer Bird".

I'm 46 and this series has the distinction of being the earliest TV series I remember actually watching when it first was shown. I must have been an early bloomer as I remember having a crush on Gay Rowan's Rachel. I also remember being fascinated by the special effects. Today, of course, we laugh at them though to be fair the effects used were just as cheap as those being used for Doctor Who at the time. Viewing it on DVD recently I can see the show's faults, but considering their limitations they did quite well, I thought. Robin Ward, who plays Garth, did other acting roles including a turn on the soap opera The Guiding Light, but is best known for his work as a game show host and as a local Toronto weatherman and entertainment reporter. He returned to sci-fi in the late 1980s as the narrator of the Canadian-produced third season of the first Twilight Zone revival series.
