Notes

Created by Johnny Speight, this comedy series was explosive stuff for it's time, provicative and controversial yet Warren Mitchell's portrayal of Tory bigot Alf Garnett became such a much loved success, "Garnett" even popped up on a few other TV series as a guest. Garnett was a loudmouth who had an opinion on everything, regularly clashing with his son in law Mike over political issues - it was Mike who would be called "Randy Scouse Git" and throughout all this, Alf's wife Else would usually sit quietly but when she did speak, she would come out with the most wonderful lines... only to be called a "silly Moo"...

Over it's ten year period there was a pilot in mid 1965 then the first series proper began in 1966. After 3 series, it was put on hold in 1968 for 4 years before returning in 1972 for a further 4 series in colour. 54 episodes in all... 23 of them - all from the first 3 black and white series - are missing. Just ten b+w episodes are left, a 2 of those only found in the last few years.

Alf Garnett went on to more series after this, most notably "In Sickness and In Health" which ran for a few series in the mid to late 80's.

This series is historically significant as it was later remade in America as All in the Family, not only changing the face of US television, but also launching a multi-series franchise that included other classics like Maude and The Jeffersons that ran into the 1980s.
