TV Series
Notes Created by series co-star Jean Marsh. The series originally ran from 1971 to 1975. It was then revived in 2010 and ran for two seasons, ending in 2012. The 2010 series is considered a continuation of the original, with Marsh reprising her original role (although the revival is set only six years after the original, rather than 35). According to the book "Inside UpDown," Marsh and co-creator Eileen Atkins' original conception was for a sitcom. This series went on to be highly influential in the genre of historic costume dramas set in the first half of the 20th century, influencing series such as The Duchess of Duke Street, The House of Eliott (also created by Marsh and Atkins) and Downton Abbey. Broadcast in the US as part of the umbrella series Masterpiece Theater, and its popularity helped establish that series as a PBS institution. Spinoff series: Thomas & Sarah (1979). The 1975 US series Beacon Hill was a partial remake. A strike forced the production of the first six episodes to be undertaken in black and white, including the pilot. The pilot was later remade in color and the original version of the pilot is believed lost. Images
