Notes

Series was broadcast by the CBC on an irregular schedule, usually once a month (in fact this is referenced in the duo's original theme song). The show often aired as part of an umbrella of rotating specials, including Show of the Week in the mid-1960s and CBC Superspecial from 1976 to 1981.

In 1980, selected skits recorded in the 1970s were edited into half-hour compilations titled Wayne & Shuster that were syndicated. Some episodes also were broadcast under the title Wayne & Shuster International.

After Wayne's death in 1990, a retrospective hosted by Shuster aired in 1991. Its ratings success led to the commissioning of the series Wayne & Shuster in Black and White. Hosted by Shuster, it was a compilation of skits recorded in the 1960s, and ran for a number of episodes. Shuster himself died in 2002.

I forgot to mention earlier that Frank Shuster was the cousin of Toronto-born artist Joe Shuster, the co-creator of Superman.

I loved this stuff. It was gentle humor but intelligent too. "Julie, don't go!" became a catchphrase both in the US and in Canada. But you need to see the skit (Rinse the Blood Off My Toga) to get it.

I was unable to locate any early title screens. The one I uploaded dates from 1980 and was also used for the syndicated compilation series.

Here is an edited version of one of their most popular skits, Shakespearean Baseball. You'd never see SNL do a skit based on Shakespeare today! (The skit was edited to remove the song "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" which might have been cut for copyright reasons by the CBC.)
