Twistin 28th Sep 2015		From my experience in the industry, NTSC and PAL each have their pros and cons. (I always felt that PAL's extra pixel height gave the screen a more square look, less cinematic.) This era of TV was largely washed out across the board. I never cared for the videotaped-before-a-live-audience brand of sitcom. Anyway, I have seen my share of 70's Euro TV and films that also have a washed-out quality -- especially Eurocrime films! As for 70's videotaped sitcoms, both "All in the Family" (muted but not washed out) (CBS) and "Sanford and Son" (NBC) managed to escape that starchy palette, which was more common on the ABC-TV network for some reason.

Neil Forbes 27th Sep 2015		Even so with filmed or videotaped shows, there was a degree of quality loss in conversion, but if the so-called "washed-out" look was deliberate, the conversion from film to NTSC videotape(if indeed they copied the filmed stuff to videotape) then upward conversion from NTSC to PAL would definitely have compounded the quality loss.



23skidoo 27th Sep 2015		Actually, most American sitcoms in the 1970s tended to have a rather washed-out look anyway because they tended to go for a more gritty look with muted colors. It was in part a consequence of moving from film to videotape, which was the standard for sitcoms until the early 1980s. Compare, for example, the videotaped Barney Miller and the filmed Police Squad.

That can be easily explained by the conversion from American NTSC colour system up to the superior German PAL system in use by more discerning countries, including Australia. The conversion highlighted the shortcomings of the American colour system against its vastly superior German counterpart.
